Completely rebuilt

A wonderful legend explains the origin of the abbey’s name: a star falling from the sky showed Friar Roger where to build an abbey during the time of William the Conqueror. Like many others, the abbey was richly supported by the duchy and enjoyed a brilliant period of economic and intellectual development, but like so many others, it also experienced ruin, in this case definitive.

Notre-Dame de l’Etoile was however reborn, thanks to efforts by the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools of Mercy. In 1892, the Bishop of Coutances laid the first stone of the new abbey church, which was inaugurated in 1898. The edifice, built on the ancient foundations, reproduces all the character of Norman constructions from the Romanesque period. An interesting set of stained-glass windows, made recently in Pascal Fallon’s workshop in the Manche department, includes original compositions, both figurative and symbolic.

Today, the work initiated by the Christian Brothers continues under the leadership of the Friends of the Abbey, a lay association that runs a secondary school, an agricultural college and a job training centre for adults.
