The museum is housed in a large bourgeois house, ideally located on the banks of the Seine, owned by the Vacquerie family, whose son Charles married Léopoldine, eldest daughter of the poet Victor Hugo.

This house and the town of Villequier are now linked to a tragedy that darkens the whole life of Victor Hugo: Léopoldine and her husband died in the sinking of their boat on the Seine in September 1843. Manuscripts, drawings and photographs evoke Victor Hugo, his family and the Vacquerie family. One to two temporary exhibitions are organized each year.
